Sandra was born Sandra Lynn Adams in 1953 in Augusta, Georgia, as her dad, Kirby Lynn Adams was working in Aiken, South Carolina at the time. The family moved back to Texas where all the grandparents were, and before long to Española, in Northern New Mexico.
She met Keith Dodd in 1977, married in 1984, and have had three children, all of whom were unschooled:
Kendall Kirby Dodd — July 29, 1986
Martin Alexander Dodd — January 14, 1989
Holly Lynn Dodd — November 2, 1991
Sandra has an English degree with minors in Psychology and Anthropology and took the requisite classes to be certified to teach secondary education. She was employed as an instructor of English for six years at Española Jr. High.
When she tried to escape, she was offered a sabbatical (at the age of 27), and turned it down. They gave her a leave of absence. She relented. She’s still absent and likes to think of it as having retired from teaching early.
Since then, she’s had several other jobs involving helping people learn something or other, and herding words onto paper for various purposes. And she’s been helping other people unschool and understand unschooling since Kirby was little.
She’s spoken at more than 60 homeschooling conferences and events spanning eight countries and every day she writes about unschooling, somewhere, answering questions online.
You can find more of Sandra’s writing on her website, sandradodd.com, the most extensive and helpful unschooling and mindful parenting site on the web today. And on her daily inspiration blog, with more than 3,000 posts, Just Add Light and Stir.
